I’m looking to go for about 10 days in January or February. I like to travel cheap, to backpack and meet people. A nice beach like Rio would be great, but I’m really looking for a memorable experience…not necessarily a relaxing vacation. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be?

January in Cartagena, Colombia is awesome. Forget about all what you have seen in the movies about Colombia, Cartagena is magic. Consider this: Julio Iglesias, Mick Jagger, Bill Clinton are among the noble visitors. Colombian women are beautiful, and prices are on your favor. Travel to Rio, Buenos Aires or Santiago, and get ready to be ripped off. Go to Cartagena, and spread the good news!
Check the L.A. Times and N.Y. Times report on Cartagena.

If you are interested in amazing history, try Peru, esp. Cuzco and the Sacred Valley.
Ecuador is a good, inexpensive place to travel if you like nature.
We’re older and less adventurous than you are, but we really loved them both. Chile was also great fun. To see our experience in these place, check out our web site (below)

It will be summer here (in South America) when it’s winter in the northern hemisphere.
Go to the Amazon (Colombia, Brazil, Peru)!!! It’s well worth it!
I also enjoyed travelling in Peru; Macchu Picchu, Cusco, Lake Titicaca (Peru, Bolivia), Arequipe and Pisco (poor man’s Galapagos).
If you make it to south Argentina, go to Ushuaia to Patagonia or Tierra del Fuego or both. You can also go to Antarctica from here (I did, and got a last minute ticket for a very low price!)
Ecuador is interesting, esp the huge Sunday market in Otavalo. I also like the equator museum in Quito.
Of course, Colombia is beautiful with few tourist, and the most polite locals in S. America!!!
