I travel frequently to South America and trust me is not a dangerous region. I'm from the UK as well and let me tell you that Colombia was pretty much the highlight of South America I thought it was going to be dangerous and chaotic but ended up becoming my second home. In Colombia I advice you to go to Bogota Cartagena and Medellin (hottest girls in the world) Brazil is great Rio, Sao Paulo, and all the southern cities are very friendly. Argentina is beautiful as well. my rank on where you should go.

1) Colombia, specially Medellin
2) Argentina, Buenos Aires
3) Brazil, liked it all
4) Chile, Santiago and it's surroundings
5) Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia are countries with a strong indigenous population, if you like adventure and explore foreign cultures then these 3 should be your top pick they are very safe as well.
( the first 4 countries have unique cultures but overall are very western and nothing shocking as they are very similar to Europeans)

seriously... stop watching so many u.s. stereotiped news about colombia... the country was EXTREMELY dangerous in the 80s and start of the 90s ... now its safe as any other country in the big towns and roads.. but do stay away from really small towns or from specific areas which might still have some danger
big cities are even safer than houston or washington in u.s.
if you dont beileve me investigate and youll see its true

venezuela i dont advise that you visit... nothing really important to seee and dangerous.. brazil is nice but a little unsafe and unstable right now just as ecuador too
