A student travel agency may well be able to get you the best deal on flights. It is not actually 'super hot' in a lot of South America in the (Northern Hemisphere) summer as it is winter in the Southern Hemisphere. It really depends where you want to go and what you want to see....I would recommend buying the book South America on a Shoestring for tips on how to travel around on a budget. My biggest tip would be to try and learn at least a little Spanish or Portuguese (depending on where you are going obviously!) before you go as people really appreciate that you have made the effort-especially in Brazil.
