No way to answer that properly without more travel information. You said the trip would finish in South America? That’s not a destination anyone can place time and money on. You’re gonna ride a whole lot of buses and you will have to find a lot of places to stay. Try to find the youth hostels for economy and pack carefully. How to handle money situations and language (Unless you already speak Spanish) will be your biggest challenges. Don’t take anything you don’t want to lose cause odds are high that you will have a problem keeping your property intact. If you’re driving, you will have a whole different set of circumstances. You had better be very adventurous. I haven’t done it but I know what’s involved. Good luck and plan carefully.
